Here’s a little snippet of the places I will be traveling to on an upcoming 2 week trip to Italy with Contiki
Rome
- Quick stop to Pisa to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa
- Visit the Colosseum and Piaza Venezia
- Take a short walk to see Pantheon and Piazza Navona
- Throw a coin into Trevi Fountain (it’s meant to improve your chances of returning to Rome!)
- Hang out on the Spanish Steps and eat a slice of pizza and people watch
- Snack: gelato (yum!)
- Drink: Cappucino (NEVER drink a cappuccino after 11am it is frowned upon in Italy, and everyone will give you weird looks)
Sorrento
- Scenic drive along the coast
- See Mt. Vesuvius
- Watch how to make pizza Italian style from the locals
- Pompeii guided walking tour
Capri
- Day trip by boat to the isle of Capri
- Capri cruise to the world famous Blue Grotto
- Villa Communale Park (views of Mt. Vesuvius)
- Drink: Limoncello (It is a sweet lemon liqueur- and quite possibly my favorite part about this trip since I love to eat lemons)
Florence
- Scenic drive around Apennine mountains
- Stop over in Tuscany
- Guided tour of a 16th century Tuscan winery while enjoying a meal of antipasto
- Drink: Chianti wine (famous drink in Tuscany)
- Walk along the River Arno
- Guided walking tour of Michelangelo’s art work in Florence
- See the Duomo, Basilica Santa Croce, Giotto’s bell tower, the Baptistry, and Piazza della Signoria
- Leather craft demonstration
- Night on the town: Space Disco
Venice
- Quick stop to Verona to see the Roman arena, and Juliet’s balcony
- Private boat through the canals and islands of Venice
- See the limestone Bridge of Sighs, the gothic arches of Doge’s Palace and St. Mark’s Square (the pigeons probably outnumber the people there!)
- Venice walking tour
- Gondola ride
Milan
- Visit the lake town of Sirmione (complete with vine-covered villas, Roman ruins, and a castle)
- Lake cruise to see the Dolomite mountain range
- See the massive Duomo cathederal, the elegant shopping mall of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and the world famous La Scala Opera house
- See Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” located at Santa Maria delle Grazie (make sure to book a couple of months in advance!)
La Spezia
- Visit Cinque Terre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, full of colorful coastal villages
- Visit the towns of Monterosso and Portovenere
- Walk along the legendary Via dell’amore (lovers lane) for amazing sea views
- Cruise along the scenic coast
- Food: grab a table by the beach and try the pesto with locally baked focaccia bread
Vatican City
- See the home of the Pope (FYI Vatican City is the smallest city in the world!)
- Locally guided tour of the Sistine chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, & the art of the Vatican museums
- Tour of the Roman forum and Colosseum
- Dinner: Take advantage of the authentic Italian restuarants, complete with an opera singer, live music and lots and lots of pasta

Hello! 🙂 I won’t be going for at least a couple more months, but I was a study abroad counselor in college so if you would like I could look up some information and create a more detailed post about Italy/Rome for you!

You’ll have lots of material for good pictures, but do try to avoid the usual tourist traps, specially for food 🙂

Yes I’d rather try authentic Italian food rather than fast food or somethin you can find here in the states. If you have any good recommendations for food in any of the locations I mentioned please let me know it would be very appreciated 🙂

I’ll think about it and get back here before your own trip!

No problem I’m enjoying reading some of your posts! And yes I am quite the picky eater! I have no fears at all when it comes to travelling, the only thing that makes me worried is if I will enjoy the food to whatever place I travel to lol 🙂 I am definitely trying to be more adventurous with my food choices but I don’t think I am ready to try fried crickets yet like I know some other travelers have tried before XD baby steps!
I’m glad you are enjoying my blogs! 🙂

Not to worry, fried crickets is not usually for anyone’s liking even for foodies! That’s definitely for the adventurous kind. 😜.
I love food and I look forward to eating new things but of course not the exotic kinds. You’re going to Italy soon. There you will find your favorite foods! I look forward to reading all the foods you are going to eat there.

How fantastic. Your pictures brought back so many memories of my trip. I did a Contiki trip when I was 22 and it was the best time of my life. So many amazing countries and Italy was a definite highlight. Have a wonderful time.

You must be quite excited about this upcoming trip to Italy. Several years ago I spent a month in Aosta, and would recommend that area for your next trip. Enjoy all the great food and wine!

I was in Italy last year – Pisa, close to the tower there is a tourist info office where the internet is free & easy to get online
Pompeii – take fold up umbrella, walking the old streets can be very hot and a little shade will help you to enjoy the experience.
We walked everywhere in Venice, the place is quite compact unless you wish to visit off shore islands (for glass etc) St Mark’s Sq expensive to eat & drink, but side streets cafes well priced and ‘cool’.
Enjoy your tip :-o)

I live and work in Rome – so when I do write something about it, it tends to be about some of the more aggravating aspects of real life here haha 🙂 It’s quite fascinating to read about tourists’ eternal fascination with Italy!

Haha yes that is definitely true for people visiting a country for the first time 🙂 I would love to be able to live and work in Italy, do you want to trade lives for a day? Lol

You must go to Torino when going to Italy!
It’s got far more history than Milano and I can give you some great tips on what to see and where to eat as I live there. 😉
Also, check out my blog, we’re at the very beginning and would need some help to grow! 🙂

Wow that sounds great! Some of my cousins live in Milan and I was hoping to maybe extend my trip or go again the following year and I would love some tips on Torino! 🙂 Also, did you live and grow up in Italy or are you an expat? I am hoping to live and work abroad someday and if you have any tips on that I would love to hear it as well 🙂

You will LOVE Italy. You already know this but I am adding my needless hurrah. I lived in Rome for 18 months in the 80s. It is my favourite city though Venice is a bit spesh too!

I do live abroad still …. right now in the USA and mostly in France. I love England but it is not home for whatever peculiar reason and I have very active wanderlust so I have to explore. You strike the same note and it’s a good one! BTW …. limoncello is by far the best way ever invented to take alcohol 😉

Very cool! 🙂 Haha I have a weird obsession with eating lemons, so I think I might have to get a couple of bottles of limoncello mailed back home to enjoy XD

Good plan! My two middle daughters are also oddly obsessed with lemons – one is a student in the UK so its fine, the other is working in Malaysia and gets distracted with other fruits and then craves the lemon!

Haha it’s nice to know there are other lemon lovers out there XD
